HostGator offers OpenClaw as a preinstalled option on its Snappy VPS plans, promising a simpler way to get an AI agent running without handling the entire installation yourself. I wanted to see how much of that promise holds up in practice, so I set up OpenClaw on a HostGator VPS and tested the server, installation process, dashboard, performance, and day-to-day management.

There is no free trial of this VPS plan itself, what stands in for one is a 30-day money-back guarantee, and HostGator’s own Terms of Service put a genuine condition on it.
The guarantee applies to VPS hosting as a category, but it explicitly excludes services billed on a monthly term, so choosing month-to-month billing at checkout to save money up front also means giving up the refund window entirely. That distinction was never surfaced anywhere in the checkout flow when I tested it.
Getting the refund on a qualifying term is not automatic either. You have to contact HostGator’s billing department by phone or live chat within the first 30 days, refunds only go back to the original payment method, credit card or PayPal, and checks, money orders, or wire transfers are excluded from refunds altogether.
Budget up to two weeks for the money to actually land, and if you paid through PayPal, cancel the billing agreement there separately or you will keep getting charged even after HostGator processes its side.
A few more things matter for anyone running OpenClaw in particular. Because OpenClaw counts as an AI Service under HostGator’s Terms of Service, an additional AI Terms of Service document applies on top of the standard agreement, one to actually read if you are running anything beyond casual use.
Domain fees, setup fees, and paid add-ons stay non-refundable regardless of when you cancel, and letting the account lapse instead of actively canceling it results in all server content being permanently deleted, which matters more here than on a static website given how much configuration goes into an agent setup.
HostGator also reserves the right to migrate your VPS to a different data center without notice, a detail that matters if you chose a region on purpose to keep latency low for an agent calling external APIs.
Agent hosting lives or dies on whether the server can hold up under load nobody is watching, so I provisioned the plan and ran a full benchmark suite against it rather than trusting a spec sheet. Here is what I tested:
This is the tier and region I actually tested, nothing else. CPU and RAM should hold close to the same per-core numbers on the larger tiers, since those are dedicated resources, but I have no data confirming that network throughput or disk speed scale the same way, so treat anything beyond NVMe 8 as unverified.
Two things stood out before the benchmarks themselves. The reported CPU identifies as an AMD EPYC 9J45, but the BIOS model string underneath is generic virtualization placeholder text, and looking up the server’s own IP traces its ISP to Oracle Cloud rather than HostGator.
An agent buyer trusting this box to run unattended for days at a time is trusting infrastructure that appears to sit on Oracle Cloud underneath HostGator’s own branding, not hardware HostGator operates directly. Second, there is no swap configured, zero bytes, which changes what actually happens when an agent’s memory use spikes.

Multi-thread throughput came in at almost exactly four times the single-thread result, with a tight fairness spread, 53 events of deviation against roughly 19,000.
In concrete terms, that means four independent processes, the OpenClaw runtime itself, a browser automation subprocess for a tool call, a background monitoring script, a log shipper, can each get actual CPU time without one silently starving another. What it does not mean is that you have unlimited room for concurrency.
If OpenClaw is orchestrating several agents that each spin up their own subprocess at the same moment, browser instances, code execution sandboxes, parallel tool calls, four cores fills up fast, and sysbench only proves those four cores are not oversold against each other, not that you have headroom beyond them.

Bandwidth sits comfortably in DDR5 territory and was never going to be the constraint here, the 8 GB ceiling is. Agent workloads carry a lot in memory at once, conversation history, tool outputs, retrieved documents, intermediate reasoning state, and that footprint grows with every agent running concurrently and every tool call that pulls more material in.
With zero swap configured, there is no cushion, a spike from a handful of agents running large contexts at the same time does not get absorbed by spilling to disk and slowing down, it hits a wall, and the Linux out-of-memory killer starts ending processes to recover RAM.
For a product sold on running unsupervised, that is the failure mode to plan around, not a gradual slowdown you would notice and react to, but a process that is simply gone when you next check on it.

The random 4K result matters more than the sequential one for OpenClaw in particular, since logging, session state, and any local database an agent runtime keeps look far more like small random writes than one large file.
For scale, a busy application database under actual traffic usually runs a few hundred to a few thousand IOPS, so this leaves substantial headroom for an agent that is constantly writing logs and state as it works, disk is unlikely to be what slows an agent down on this tier.

I ran this twice against different servers to rule out a fluke, and both runs landed within a few percent of each other at zero packet loss.
For an agent making frequent, small API calls to model providers or external tools, what matters is not the 8 Gbps headline number, it is the sub two millisecond latency and the absence of dropped packets across both runs, since a lost packet on a tool call can mean a retry, a timeout, or an agent stalling mid task.
On raw bandwidth, an agent workload would need to be pulling or pushing large files constantly to get anywhere near this ceiling, which is not how most agent traffic behaves, so bandwidth itself is not the constraint here, reliability is, and both runs showed it holding steady.

This is the test that matters most for OpenClaw’s actual use case, and zero failures across all three stressors, with nothing flagged as untrustworthy, is the result that counts, not the bogo ops totals. I want to be precise about its limits, though.
Three minutes of full load is a reasonable proxy for a burst, several agents all hitting hard at once, not for what happens across six or twelve hours of continuous unattended operation, and a short synthetic test cannot see noisy-neighbor contention from other tenants sharing the same physical Oracle Cloud hardware underneath.
An agent running unattended does not get the benefit of a human noticing it struggled, so this result is reassuring for acute load, but it is not a guarantee for a long, quiet week of background execution.
On the specific question of whether this server can carry OpenClaw through sustained, unattended work, the evidence is good but not unconditional. CPU scaling across threads was close to linear, disk I/O earned its NVMe label on both sequential and random patterns with wide headroom over what agent logging and state actually generate, network latency stayed low and stable across two independent runs, and three straight minutes of stress on CPU, memory, and disk each produced zero failures.
The condition to take seriously is memory. Eight gigabytes with zero swap means an agent workload that grows its working state or its concurrency past what this tier comfortably holds does not slow down, it gets killed by the kernel with no warning graph to catch beforehand.
If you are running one or two agents with moderate state, that ceiling is far away. If you are orchestrating several agents each holding large amounts of state at once, size up before you find out the hard way.
Keep the scope of everything else in mind too. This describes NVMe 8 in Ashburn, tested once, on infrastructure that traces back to Oracle Cloud rather than hardware HostGator appears to run itself, and these are synthetic benchmark numbers, not a live test of OpenClaw itself under its own actual workload. CPU and memory should hold up proportionally if you size up for a heavier agent workload, but I have not verified that network or disk performance scale the same way on the larger tiers, so do not assume it without testing.
Agent hosting lives or dies on how much babysitting it demands. If getting OpenClaw running costs you an afternoon of configuration work, the “run agents without DevOps” pitch falls apart before the first agent even executes.
This section covers the four things I actually tested: signing up and paying for the server (Registration), what greets you the moment you log in (Dashboard), the process of standing up the instance itself (Server Management), and where all of that nets out for someone trying to host OpenClaw in particular rather than a generic website.
I want to walk through the entire path here, not stop at the configuration screen, because for an agent hosting buyer the checkout experience matters almost as much as the server spec.
If you are trusting a provider to run unattended workflows, the account you create for it should not feel like an afterthought bolted onto a shopping cart.
Finding the product. OpenClaw is not under Web Hosting. It lives in its own Products menu, next to Google Workspace, SSL certificates, and HostGator’s other AI tools (n8n, GatorClaw, Claude Code).

HostGator flags NVMe 4 as its Recommended pick, but I clicked “Choose Plan” on NVMe 8 instead. I sized up on purpose. An agent that gets memory starved mid execution fails silently in a way a slow webpage load does not, and 4 GB of RAM felt thin for anything running unattended for hours at a time. If you are only testing OpenClaw for a weekend project, the Recommended tier is a legitimate choice, but for anything meant to keep running without you watching it, I would size up the way I did.
Choosing NVMe 8 carried me straight into the Configure Your Server page, and it arrives pre-configured rather than blank.
OpenClaw is already selected as the software, NVMe 8 is already locked in as the hardware, and a visible “Start fresh” button sits at the top if I wanted to abandon that preset and build from scratch instead.
What that pre-configuration actually means in practice is that every section still opens for editing on request:
I left Support & Security and Advanced options at their defaults, since neither one served an unattended agent build I was only testing, and I did not touch Location or Hardware again since NVMe 8 in Ashburn was already what I wanted.
After settling on that, I clicked “Continue to checkout.”
That click landed me on the cart, not the checkout itself, and the stop mattered. Sitting alongside the OpenClaw server was a one month trial of a professional email product I never selected, added automatically and opted in by default.
Nothing in the OpenClaw configuration steps had mentioned email hosting at any point, so the only reason I caught it was reading the cart line by line before paying.
If you click through a cart page the way most people click through terms and conditions, you would carry that add-on into your order without noticing. It renews at a small monthly charge rather than anything that breaks the bank, but for a buyer trying to judge whether HostGator’s pricing is transparent, this is the first place in the flow that adds something to your bill without asking first.
From the cart, checkout is where HostGator folds account creation into the purchase itself rather than treating it as its own step. Billing details, a password for the new account, and payment information all live on one page, with no separate registration screen before it.
That single page design cuts the distance between deciding to buy and having a working order down to almost nothing, which suits the speed OpenClaw’s whole pitch is built on.
What it does not do is confirm who is actually opening the account before the charge clears. I typed a card number, hit submit, and the payment was accepted with no verification step in between, no confirmation code, no identity check of any kind.
For a product handing out infrastructure meant to run unattended and unsupervised, I expected at least one deliberate pause between paying and provisioning, and there is not one.
A confirmation email landed inside a minute of paying, and I was redirected straight into the client dashboard without needing to click anything else.
What I thought: The strongest part of this whole path is what happens after checkout, not during it. Because OpenClaw was already locked into the configuration before I ever reached the cart, the server on the other end arrives with it installed and set up. There is no SSH session where you pull a Docker image, wire up environment variables, or work through an install script yourself. You open the confirmation email, log in, and OpenClaw is already sitting there, ready to run agents. For a product whose whole pitch is removing DevOps overhead, that is where HostGator actually delivers on it.
The checkout that gets you there is a separate question. Sizing past the badge yourself, catching an added trial, and accepting no verification step are all manageable for someone who already knows what they are doing, but they still put that responsibility on you instead of the platform. That is a fair trade if the payoff is a server that arrives ready to use rather than one you have to build yourself, and on the evidence here, it is.
After registration, next I wanted to see what actually greets an OpenClaw buyer once they log in, since a product sold on running unattended needs an account area that does not bury the one server you came here to check.
Logging in dropped me on a general Dashboard rather than anything OpenClaw specific. A personalized welcome banner sits at the top, next to a “Website Metrics” widget scoring a site that has nothing to do with the VPS I had just bought, a domain search box, and a horizontal carousel of upsells, a security add on, a hosting add on, a premium SSL upgrade, and a bundled AI model subscription.
None of that mentions OpenClaw or the agent infrastructure it is meant to run on.
The sidebar carries the actual structure, made up of Dashboard, Websites, AI Agents, Email & Office, Domains, Hosting, Security, and Services, with Renewal Center and Marketplace set apart below a divider.
Reaching the server meant clicking Hosting, then a My Plans sub item that only appears once Hosting is expanded, landing on a list that shows every hosting product on the account as a separate card.
For someone running an agent that is supposed to operate without them watching it, the card itself is reassuring, showing disk storage as a percentage, a live server status, the IP address with a one click copy icon, the server image, and Start, Reboot, Power Off, and Open Terminal buttons right there on the list, no need to open a deeper page just to check whether the box is still online.
What that card and the rest of the client area do not show is a plan price, a billing cycle, or a renewal date. Checking Order History and My Payment Methods from the account avatar confirmed neither one fills that gap.
Order History lists past orders as a flat table, date, order number, the card used, and the total charged, with nothing tying an order back to a plan name or a renewal schedule.
My Payment Methods shows the saved card on file, masked to its last four digits, with an expiration date and a primary designation, useful for managing how you pay, not for knowing what an unattended OpenClaw server will actually cost you at renewal.
Renewal Center is a separate menu item I did not open, so I cannot confirm whether that number lives there instead. On security, the avatar menu lists My Profile and Users & Roles, but I did not check either for a two factor authentication toggle, so I am not confirming one exists.
Support sits behind a question mark icon with a Knowledge Base link and a phone number, plus a chat bubble present on every screen. I did not find a way to open a support ticket directly from the dashboard in what I tested.
What I thought: For a product whose entire pitch is unattended operation, I would have expected the dashboard to at least surface the server’s health somewhere near the login screen. Instead it treats an OpenClaw VPS exactly like a shared hosting plan, buried behind the same Hosting and My Plans clicks, sitting next to upsells for products that have nothing to do with agent infrastructure. Once you know the path, it is quick, but nothing about the first screen you see signals that this account is running something meant to operate without supervision.
Lastly, I wanted to see what actual control I had over the server once OpenClaw was running on it, not just what the product page promised.
Clicking Manage from the My Plans card opened a panel with five tabs, Overview, License, Access, SSH Keys, and AI Tooling.
Overview repeats the disk storage, status, and IP address from the list view, adds the data center location, and lists a Root Password field that only offers a Reset Password link rather than a way to view the current one.
Because an application was already installed, the Overview tab showed both a Reimage button and a second, separate Manage button sitting next to it, a naming collision that deserves flagging since the same word now points to two different destinations depending on which one you click.

The AI Tooling tab matters more here than it would on a plain VPS. It starts empty, no credits, and the API key panel stays locked with a message saying credits have to be added first.
According to HostGator’s own documentation, these credits are a prepaid balance for its unified AI Gateway, the balance resets to zero if it sits unused past an expiration window, though existing API keys and workspaces stay intact, and a fresh purchase resets that expiration clock for the whole balance. What matters for an OpenClaw buyer is that none of this is mandatory.
If your agents call a model provider directly with their own API key rather than routing through HostGator’s gateway, you never touch this balance at all, and OpenClaw runs the same either way.
I also opened Reimage to see what switching software actually involves, since OpenClaw arriving preinstalled does not mean it is permanent. It opens a Plain OS tab (Alma, CentOS, Fedora, Rocky, Debian, Ubuntu) and an Applications tab listing more than forty one click options, including several other named agent frameworks that compete directly with OpenClaw.
I selected the current image again rather than wiping the server, and the panel locked into a “Server reimaging is in progress” state while it worked, confirming the rebuild actually happens rather than just showing a spinner.
A few gaps stood out that matter in particular for unattended agent workloads. There is no backup or snapshot feature anywhere across these five tabs. There is no resource monitoring beyond the disk storage percentage, no CPU graph, no RAM graph, nothing that would tell you an agent is quietly consuming more memory than expected over time.
And despite the checkout page advertising DDoS protection and a firewall as standing features, none of these tabs expose port management or firewall rules to you directly, which is exactly the gap the earlier reusable support question about opening a custom port is built to test.
What I thought: The controls that exist work as described, reimaging actually rebuilds the server, SSH keys persist through it, and the AI Tooling panel is honest that it is optional infrastructure rather than a hidden requirement.
But an agent hosting product sold on running without supervision is exactly the case where missing monitoring and missing backups matter most, since there is no dashboard graph that would tell you something has gone wrong while you are not watching, which is the entire scenario OpenClaw is meant for.
Clicking the second Manage button, the one that sits next to Reimage once OpenClaw is actually installed, did not ask me to touch a terminal at all.
It opened OpenClaw’s own web dashboard directly, a full interface with a sidebar for Connections, Agents & Tools, and Privacy & Security, landing me on a Model Setup screen under Settings and Models.
That screen is where the actual work starts, since OpenClaw ships without a model connected by default.
Three paths are offered side by side, running a model locally through LM Studio or Ollama, signing in with a hosted provider through ChatGPT, OpenRouter, or xAI, or pasting an API key and token directly for a provider like OpenAI.
I did not carry a connection through to completion, but the page states that OpenClaw verifies an actual model reply before marking the connection ready, so it is checking for a working response rather than just accepting a key at face value.
One thing here deserves a direct callout. The Knowledge Base article I tested earlier described OpenClaw’s first run as a conversational setup over SSH, a named agent walking you through configuration in the terminal.
What I found by clicking Manage was a graphical web dashboard instead, no terminal involved. Either OpenClaw offers both paths depending on how you choose to set it up, or the documentation and the interface have drifted apart, I cannot tell which from what I tested, but the two accounts do not match.
That gap aside, HostGator’s own part of the job is confirmed finished the moment that dashboard loads. Getting from a card charge to a reachable, running OpenClaw instance took no SSH session, no manual install, and no server left blank for me to configure by hand.
What I thought: Landing directly in a graphical dashboard rather than a terminal prompt is a genuine accessibility win for anyone who was expecting to need SSH just to get started, and the built-in verification step on the model connection is a sensible safeguard rather than trusting an unchecked key. The mismatch with what the Knowledge Base describes is the kind of detail that would confuse someone who read that article first and then found a completely different interface waiting for them.
Walking back through this whole section, the arc looks like this. Registration folded account creation into checkout itself, no separate sign up screen, a plan wizard that already had OpenClaw and a hardware tier preselected before I touched anything, and a card charge accepted with no identity check at all. I sized past the Recommended badge myself, since the tier HostGator suggested looked light for anything meant to run unsupervised, and I caught an email trial sitting in the cart that I never asked for.
The Dashboard I landed in after paying did not treat that purchase as anything special. It buried the server behind a Hosting menu and a My Plans sub item, past a domain search box and a rotating carousel of upsells for products that have nothing to do with agent hosting. Once I found the actual VPS card, the information on it was solid, storage, status, IP, one click access to Start and Reboot, but nothing about the account area signaled that this was infrastructure meant to run without supervision.
Server Management held up better on the controls that exist, a browser terminal and a recovery console both worked as described, SSH keys survived a reimage exactly as promised, and reimaging itself actually rebuilt the server rather than just relabeling it.
What was missing mattered more here than it would on a plain website host, no backup control, no resource monitoring past a single storage percentage, and no visible firewall or port management despite DDoS protection being advertised at checkout, gaps that matter most because OpenClaw is meant to run while you are not watching it.
Then came the part that actually answers the question this whole section was built around, whether HostGator delivers a one click product you never have to touch infrastructure for. Clicking the second Manage button, the one that only appears once OpenClaw is installed, dropped me straight into OpenClaw’s own graphical dashboard, no terminal, no config file, no server left blank for me to figure out. A Model Setup screen was already waiting, with local models, hosted provider sign in, or a pasted API key all offered side by side, and a built in check that verifies an actual model reply before calling the connection ready.
That is the promise held up under an actual click, not just on the landing page, though I will note directly that what I found there did not match the conversational, SSH based setup the Knowledge Base article described, which is its own small warning about trusting that documentation blindly.
So the verdict splits along a clear line. On the specific claim, a server with OpenClaw already installed and reachable without you touching infrastructure, HostGator delivers, convincingly and without exception in what I tested. On everything wrapped around that claim, checkout verification, an account area that treats this like any other hosting plan, and a management panel with genuine gaps in backup and visibility, you are doing more work yourself than the pitch admits to.
OpenClaw is sold on running without you watching it, which means the moment you do need a human, it is probably because something silent broke, an agent stopped executing, a webhook stopped arriving, a credential expired.
Support quality matters more here than on a plan where you are actively logged in and would notice a problem yourself.
HostGator gives you three ways to reach it, a live chat bubble on every page, a Knowledge Base behind the same question mark icon, and a phone number. I tested live chat and the Knowledge Base.
Getting into the chat took one click, no menu, no picking a category first. A short intake asked for my name and whether I wanted a transcript, both answered in seconds, and then a human agent, Neeraja, opened the conversation directly, no bot troubleshooting layer in between.
Since OpenClaw agents commonly need to receive inbound traffic, webhooks, callback URLs, API triggers, I asked the question that matters most for that setup, whether opening a non-standard port like 8443 with ufw or iptables directly on the server is enough, or whether HostGator’s own network level firewall and DDoS protection sits in front of that and needs a separate rule opened on their side.
The agent asked me to confirm my plan, Snappy 4000 NVMe 8, then took about seven minutes of checking before answering with a link to a generic Stack Exchange post on iptables, a privatebin paste of supplementary notes, and a line stating traffic would reach the server right away once the port was opened locally, closing with the note that since I had root access, I could handle it from my own end.
That answer covers the half of the question anyone could have looked up, and never actually confirms or denies whether OpenClaw’s inbound webhooks pass through an additional layer on HostGator’s side.
For a product built around unattended operation, that is exactly the kind of gap that would only surface once a live integration silently stopped receiving callbacks.
What I thought: Reaching a person fast, with no bot and no upsell attempt, is a genuine point in HostGator’s favor. But an agent hosting buyer asking about inbound connectivity needs a complete answer, not just the reassuring half of one, and this conversation left the actual network architecture unexplained.
After live chat, I decided to see whether the documentation could answer what the agent had not.
I searched openclaw directly and got four results, all filtered automatically under a VPS/Dedicated category, tight and relevant, no noise to dig through.
I opened the top hit, How to Connect HostGator AI Credits to OpenClaw. It is a full terminal walkthrough rather than a settings menu guide, which matches how OpenClaw actually sets up, through a conversational agent named Crestodian on first run rather than a traditional wizard.
Section 1 covers first-time setup with no provider configured, copy paste command blocks at every step, screenshots of the actual terminal output so you can confirm your session matches.
Section 2, connecting credits to an OpenClaw install that already has a different provider configured, carries a yellow callout admitting it has not been retested against the current conversational setup and might behave differently. A Testing the Connection section closes it out with a simple message you can send the agent to confirm the credentials actually work.
