Absolutely terrible. I have been using Webfaction since 2009. It has slowly gotten worse over time-
I got an alert that there was an issue with my account - I looked into it and it was something well beyond anything I understood and it wasn't even related to any of my web apps, so it really seems to be an issue on their end.
When I asked for help, they told me to hire a web developer to fix it.... It wasn't an issue that was even close to touching one of my websites.
I have office 365 for one of my clients passing through the email and I'm not quite sure how to set that up myself- but as soon as I can figure out how to migrate it to a new host- I am done with webfaction. I can go somewhere else for half of what I pay for webfaction anyway-
Stay Away from webfaction or who they just sold out to.
They're a sinking ship and there are so many better options out there. Don't use Webfaction. Their customer service is completely hands off. Their servers have terrible perfomance. There are so many better options out there.
HORRIBLE SUPPORT. Only offer tickets so you have to wait for response, sometimes it is minutes sometimes hours. If you have an emergency you're stuck waiting. But worst of all is they are EXTREMELY hands off on helping with certain issues like updating PHP or other items. So if you are not 100 percent tech person you are in trouble. They are Extremely disappointing, I could not run away fast enough.
I like how easy WebFaction is to use as a developer. They make it easy to set up databases users and email addresses through their web interface without throwing too many options in your face at once, and it's also easy to control stuff through the command line if you're comfortable with that. Lots of good integrations too.
I've been on Webfaction's shared hosting plan from 2013 when they were owned by private entity and hosted the servers with Softlayer datacenter. But at the end of 2017 they got acquired by Godaddy and moved to HEG's St.Louis data center and the new servers are just awful. They go down atl east 2-3 times a week! Webfaction uses Ngnix as reverse proxy and many a times my sites were automically fall out from their configuration files - the result - blank pages. I had to open support department to get the things right. Webfaction does not use HTTP2, neither litespeed server or mariadb! They use the heavy and slow Apache server. The reliability of their servers has fallen down. They increase pricing from $8 to $10 per month for a shared web hosting plan. But you don't get a dedicated IP or control panel or access to backups. Their support is good.
This is where other and myself have difficulty with their services....There isn't a great way to know what size server package you need for websites. I started with the basic package and had numerous problems with the sites going down. The fact is...my server choice was too low for what I needed. It is no different than having a computer with 1 GB of RAM and it sucking. If you need any kind of performance, you need to start with a minimum of 4 GB of RAM (currently the $30 package) and it will run 10 Rails Applications easy. Stop being cheap and thinking you deserve better!! Now the best thing about Webfaction is emails. I have had little to no problem with email accounts working and not having to pay $5 per email is a HUGE cost savings for reliable email accounts. I host 33 Rails websites for $60 including over 100 emails accounts and there is no where more reliable than Webfaction.
I have been a customer since 2009. They are awful.
I have been a long term customer (over 8 years now!) and they are... extremely poor. Imagine your website going down like 30 times per day for a week and they basically refusing to do anything to correct the situation. Just answering "in this moment is up" or "we will look into it". Imagine this kind of behavior going on for months. Of course I moved my important websites elsewhere and kept it for minor things. At some point they made me migrate to another server instead of correcting the issue with someone causing an overload. And now the same thing is happening, they are not helping in any way, just wasting my time.
A very slow server to work, expensive and difficult to use
If migrations were not so hard, I would change my hosting provider right away. In fact, right now the server is down for some hours. I pay more than 150$ per year for a service without any dedicated IP or server, but for a very slow one.
